MENTAL HEALTH

When we talk about Mental Health problems, we are talking about issues like:

  • Stress

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorders

  • Depression

  • Panic Disorder

  • Irrational Fears

  • Phobias

  • Eating Disorder & Obesity

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Christians are normal human beings with feelings and emotions with active mind.  The human mind is very active and volatile. The human mind if not controlled, could work against us and cause us some serious problems. Mental Health problems affect Christians in every country across the world. The stigma attached to Mental Health issues and the high cost of treatment prevents many Christians from seeking and accessing services from qualified Mental Health Professionals. A lot of Christians are ashamed to accept that they have Mental Health Problems. Some Christians think and feel that admitting to Mental Health problems make them lesser Christians which is absolutely wrong. Many Bishops & Pastors are suffering from serious Mental Health problems and because of ignorance and spiritual arrogance, they do not think it is important to seek help from qualified Mental Health professionals, which is to their own detriment. It is a known fact that Mental Health problems untreated, contribute to the development of diseases like Cancer, Diabetes, High blood pressure, Obesity & Stroke.

Let us look at life situations that can challenge the Mental Health of any Christian:

  • Death of a loved one – Wife, Husband, Child, Uncle, Aunt, Nephew, Niece, Grand Mother & father, Friend, Pastor, Bishop etc. (Loss & Bereavement).

  • Loss of Job.

  • Business Failure.

  • Long term/Terminal Sickness

  • Fertility Problems/Childlessness

  • Child Abuse, Trauma or Neglect

  • Home Repossession causing Homelessness

  • Divorce & Separation

  • Loneliness

  • Miscarriage & Still Birth

  • Academic Failure

  • Pandemic & Natural Disasters

According to the BBC, over 25 million UK citizens are suffering from anxiety during this pandemic of Corona Virus. A lot of families lost their loved ones, Churches lost their Bishops & Pastors to Corona Virus currently ravaging the whole world. The fear and uncertainty created by this pandemic is challenging the Mental Health of everyone and there seem to be no end in sight. Many people have committed suicide during this pandemic and many are battling for their lives in various hospitals across the world. Churches are now shut down and no more physical fellowship meeting and services. Services are now held on various platforms of the social media and many Christians are struggling to come to terms with this new normal. The shut-down of schools, businesses, institutions and churches and complete lockdown keeping families at home has caused so much damage to the Mental Health of many vulnerable individuals. Our services are always in demand and, because of the devastating impact of Covid-19, people need us now, more than ever before.
